The Changpas are pastoral Nomads who roam the high altitude plains of South Eastern Ladakh with their yaks, goats and sheep. Living much of the time in tents and following the ancient migration routes in search of fresh pastures.

In June and July, during the shearing season the wool is sold and some is retained by the women to be  washed by hand and the dirt, grease and clumps removed ready for mechanical carding. After the second carding the wool is ready for the ladies to begin spinning by hand into yarn. Traditional portable backstrap looms called Sked Thags are used by the Changpa women during the short summer months to weave fabric featuring traditional motifs and patterns. 

In 2018 the Jungwa Foundation launched its sustainable livelihoods initiative and now works with nomadic herders and women weavers from Chantang. We are delighted to feature a range of the Changpa products in our shop.
