Door to the Himalayas Modern Slavery Act Statement 2025-26

 This statement is published in accordance with section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 for the period June 30th 2024 to June 29th 2025 and provides information on the steps that Door to the Himalayas Ltd have taken during the year to ensure that slavery and trafficking is not taking place in its business.

What is Modern Slavery?

Modern slavery has many forms: slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labour and human trafficking. Ultimately it involves one person controlling another person and thereby depriving them of their liberty with the aim of exploiting them for personal or commercial gain.

Door to the Himalayas Ltd was founded in 2007 by Helen Kumar  following frequent trips to India to study yoga and realising that her commercial skills could help Himalayan artisans gain a route to market internationally and by working directly with them it would be possible to pay the artisans the best possible price for their products in order to improve their livelihoods. Door to the Himalayas Ltd has always aimed to run its business responsibly. With this in mind, we have looked at all areas of our business and identified that our supply chain represents the greatest risk of slavery and this is where we have focused our resources.

Our Supply Chain

All our stock suppliers are in India and we visit our artisan groups annually to ensure that best practises are in place, improvements to livelihoods are being made and that sustainable business is maintained. We work with NGO’s where the focus is on improving women’s livelihoods (Empower Her and Jungwa Foundation) and with rural tribal communities (Botiya tribe) where we engage directly to explain the importance of there being no forced labour, living wages, no discrimination, no harsh or inhumane treatment and no child labour and annually we visit these communities to conduct a check that these conditions are being met. We have a long established relationship with the majority of our suppliers and are mutually working together to ensure that improvements in livelihoods is the focus of our business partnership. Where we work with a third party to source hand crafted products, we have built up long standing relationships where the importance of our values is mutual and well established. In sourcing new third party suppliers we are extremely vigilant and conduct a thorough review before committing to doing business.

Our business is founded on the principles of fair trade and has over the years seen first hand improvements in the livelihoods with the artisans groups with whom a sustainable business has been developed. Our aim is to continue to follow best practises and to improve the lives of these Himalayan artisans.
